According to the Financial Times, entrepreneurial mindset, refers to a specific state of mind which orientates human conduct towards entrepreneurial activities and outcomes. Individuals with entrepreneurial mindsets are often drawn to opportunities, innovation and new value creation.
The crave for nation building and economic growth around the globe comes most easily with the development of the peoples mindset. The development of the entrepreneurial mindset remains the key to innovative changes seen in most developed and advanced countries of the world today. It is evident that majority of the Nigerian populace, especially the youths choose to avoid this tag “ENTREPRENUER”, not because of the seeming challenges that they must overcome and the risk involved, but for lack of proper understanding and wrong mindset.
The truth is that we are all entrepreneurs, it’s just the mindset. We often take entrepreneurship as the exclusive preserve of the aggressive, influential, creative, opportunistic and risk takers or people with great personality and vision. These are no doubt, some of the qualities of an entrepreneur, but this depiction is only partially correct. All of us are entrepreneurs. We are all born with the innate ability to survive; and survival involves innovative thinking. Think about your life. Think about the times you needed to make a decision –- a choice –- that involved doing something innovative (something you were not accustomed to doing) so that you could “move on” or adapt to a challenging situation. In our normal course of daily living, we are faced with choices.
The choices we make depends on our mindset. Sometimes, these choices are out of the norm; the situations that afford us a real opportunity to change our lifestyle — our life — and adapt or destroy our normal way of approaching whatever life throws at us.
Being an entrepreneur is essentially doing things differently from the way we have been doing it, challenging the statuesque and creating new way of doing things that will add value to our life existence. The right change we need is the change of mindset, the change in our way of thinking, the need for creativity and innovative thinking.
To me if you can make choices you are an entrepreneur. This is because according to D.M.D Carolis, choices are made with the alternative courses of action in mind, by simply detaching yourself from what you usually do and attempting a new course of action; the pain of choosing to be resilient in the face of adversity; the gut wisdom of taking a risk because you know that you just can’t do “more of the same.” Maybe it is starting a company; maybe it is presenting a new idea to your boss; maybe it is choosing to pursue a degree; maybe it is physically moving to another location…the choices are endless and we face them throughout our lives.
It is therefore necessary that we think as entrepreneurs in our life endeavours( be it in the home, the school, the teacher, the job as an employee, the employer, the trader or business owner) to be able to make creative, innovative and valuable changes that would ultimately transform us as individuals and bring lasting changes to our country in general.
Remember, when we think differently or act differently, to bring innovation and value to our way of life, we are entrepreneurs.
