MOVING AGAINST THE TIDES

Wow, this is the last day of the month of March 2016, the first three months has gone, marking the end of the first quarter of the year. How time flies! How has the year been? Is it going as planned? If not, why? Never mind, you are not alone. There have been a lot of distractions along the way- for which we cannot help but must endure. The country is under going tremendous CHANGES in every facet. And in these we must endure. Having tried everything you can to focus on your New Year resolution and they are not working, what do you do? You STAND!

You must STAND STRONG especially in the face of these adversities. Yes, stand tall to face it. Be immovable when the winds of CHANGE blow. This will enable you achieve strength in adversities; develop a balanced and godly character. Be consistent in your relationship with God. Walk in the spirit. There is nothing like failure, it only an opportunity to try again until you have succeeded. You only fail when you lose hope. Failure is not falling down but staying down. You can fall down just like every normal human being, dust yourself and get up. You cannot fail!

Be PERSISTENT, nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; genius will not. Education will not. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Keep pressing on!

Even if you got off-track with your goal. It happens. It will only take perseverance. Beating yourself up over a short-term setback will only keep you stuck. Instead, forgive yourself, and move on.

Just get going, start all over again. Keep moving in the direction of your goals. Avoid procrastination, you will feel better off about yourself and the tasks. You will feel more in control and optimistic.

Again, be specific about what you want to achieve, avoid frivolous and ambiguous pursuit. Ambiguity is the enemy of change “To avoid this we must learn to script our critical moves”. To be successful we must translate our ambiguous goal into concrete behaviours. We must initiate specific actions to attain to our goals. For example, it is ambiguous to say we want to lose weight, we must specify what kilogram of weight that we are to achieve and when. Say within a month, i will like to shed 15kg of weight.

Create implementation intentions. Part of the reason people never get back on-track with their goals is explained by how their goal is set (i.e., is it specific enough?). Another part of the problem, however, is there’s no clear plan for acting on the goal. Implementation intentions as mini plan helps you follow through on your goals. It takes the form of an if –then statement- if situation arises, i will perform behaviour Y.

There is now more demand on our time than ever before. So also, never before in history have we faced so many possible distractions, making it even more difficult to get back on track with our goals.

To eliminate these distractions, you have to set aside a specific block of time for your goals. This works best if you set a definite start and end time for just that specific goal, avoiding possible distractions from any other tasks. For example, from 3pm to 5pm i will work on my sales budget. At this time lock your door, off your phone, etc and focus on the sales budget alone without distractions.

Be self disciplined in everything you do, more so in the pursuit of your goals, to be motivated, do it even when you don’t feel like doing it. Stop procrastination. Prove people wrong, set yourself up to achieve your dreams. The sky will only be your stepping stone.

To achieve your dreams you must be uncomfortable with your present situation. This will motivate you to make a change.

Let important people in your life know about your new goals. This creates external deadlines that will enable you achieve them with speed, at least to meet people’s expectation of you.

Don’t give up easily when you make mistakes. Be resilient. It’s not over yet. It cannot be over until it is over. Until you achieve your set goals, it cannot be over! You have every liberty to start all over again, now more intelligently.

Welcome to April 2016. Welcome to a new quarter. Welcome to a new dawn!
